About the Event
Elysian Valley Arts Collective Presents a Free Poetry Series with A.K. Toney
Discover the art of poetry and spoken word performance with one Los Angeles’ most well-respected poets, A.K. Toney. A modern day Griot, Toney has dedicated his life to writing, performing and teaching poetry to young people. With over twenty years experience in education and writing workshops, Toney has taught workshops and performed at some of our city’s most revered spaces including Angel’s Gate Cultural Center, LA County Museum of Art, The Natural History Museum and has worked as an educator with LAUSD and Vista Americorps, Watts Learning Center K-5 Charter School.
Toney is the founder of Reading Is Poetry, a literacy program engineered to instill self-esteem, self-expression and self-efficacy in students and he is experienced in working with at-risk youth. Through all of these experiences, Toney has redefined himself as a Neo Griot, enthusiastically imparting his knowledge to budding poets of all ages via innovative methods, music and rythyms.
During this eight week poetry series, students will learn the various poetry writing techniques, using the Reading is Poetry process. They will make their own poetry art book, learn to use small percussion instruments to accompany their poetry reading and participate in a filmed spoken word performance with a live audience at a venue in Frogtown.
This series is free, for students ages 18-24 that are interested in learning poetry in an immersive, nurturing, creative environment where students are encouraged to freely express themselves via writing, music and rhythms. If you are a beginner with no experience or an intermediate writer looking to enhance your skills by learning to integrate art and music-making into your work, this is a great series for you.
